An all too common occurrence in our schools but one that can be addressed by a short instructional package designed to change a student’s ability to understand text they struggle with.
Marie facilitates seminars and workshops at schools and training centres in Reciprocal Teaching - a successful and explicit method of teaching groups of children to increase their comprehension competency. Based on Sociocultural and Educational theories the teacher leads the group in Reciprocal Teaching strategies which aims to develop the student’s metacognition or self- awareness and self-monitoring about aspects of the text which in turn successfully increases their comprehension of text.
Reciprocal Teaching has been used successfully in New Zealand and overseas with average and low decoders, low comprehenders across all school levels, ESOL children, deaf children and kindergarten children for language improvement. Students not only increase their comprehension and decoding skills but for many their self-confidence grows and even writing skills as their expertise with words is enhanced.
Marie provides a package to suit the needs of the school or group of teachers which includes a booklet of useful and practical tips for the classroom teacher. Marie is co-author of three international articles and a new manual for teachers of Reciprocal Teaching, (2008) which includes the added bonus of photocopiable pages for busy teachers.
